Heartbleed security hemorrhaging continues

Heartbleed Bug

Heartbleed continues its rampage across the internet. There are too many stories to tell and too little time. Read on only if you have the stomach for it.

  • Networking companies Cisco and Juniper have revealed that several dozen models of their hardware devices are affected by the OpenSSL security flaw known as Heartbleed. To see if any of your networking products made this list, Cisco’s advisory can be found here, and Juniper’s here.
  • Two sources close to the NSA allege that the spy agency has exploited Heartbleed since it first appeared over 2 years ago.
  • Android smartphones and tablets running version 4.1.1 of the Google operating system are vulnerable to the bug. According to Google, this may affect less than 10% of all Android devices, but given that there are nearly 900 million Android OS devices, that still means millions.
  • The vulnerability was used to steal 900 taxpayer ID’s from Canada’s Revenue Agency.

What this means for you:

The security implications of the Heartbleed vulnerability are staggering and very difficult to encompass. Now, more than ever, you must keep a close eye on your digital assets and accounts. Confirm with your financial institutions whether or not they were impacted by the bug (most major, commercial banking institutions did NOT use OpenSSL), and if they were, wait until they confirm that they have fixed it before changing your password. Do NOT use any software or websites confirmed to be affected by Heartbleed until they patch the bug, even to change your password. If you do this while the vulnerability still exists, there is a good possibility that hackers can actually see you changing your password and record the new one. Right now, because of the spotlight on this hole, hackers are racing to exploit the panic and confusion, and you are more likely than ever to be hacked. Wait until your websites confirm they have patched the security hole before using them to change your password.

Keep in mind that many, many organizations are still working through the impact this bug has on their technology, and many are just as confused as you might be. There will continue to be a lot of uncertainty and possible panicky responses from company representatives who are ill-informed on their company’s official stance on Heartbleed. The vulnerability affects a technology that is sophisticated and not easily explained, and not even the most eloquent among technology professionals can convey the problem and solutions in easy-to-understand terms. During these uncertain times, constant vigilance is the only weapon many of us have at the moment, so keep your eyes open and your IT consultant on speed-dial!

Snapchat Hacked – Millions of Mobile Numbers Exposed

Another day, another social networking site hacked. This time, unfortunately, it was new internet darling SnapChat that was breached, exposing over four million mobile numbers and user names. The hacker(s) who published the data did so purportedly to compel Snapchat to take action on security flaws in its platform that have been known since earlier in the year, but remained unpatched up to (and even past) the public release on Dec 31, 2013 of the information harvested by exploiting the security flaws.

What this means for you:

SnapChat is very popular with younger generations who moved to the service for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was more privacy (from Facebook-savvy parents and authority figures) and less permanence (Snaps are deleted forever within seconds of being shared). Irony aside, the data exposed in the security breach reveals sensitive personal data from millions of individuals, many of whom are probably minors, a demographic that may include your child(ren).

You can check this website to see if any of your family’s mobile numbers were leaked by this SnapChat hack. While the data released isn’t as sensitive as bits like Social Security numbers, birthdates or debit card pins, some other services do use mobile numbers as identifying data, alongside usernames which many people (including Snapchat teens) like to re-use as part of their online “brand.” Armed even with these slender morsels, clever social engineers can wedge their way into someone’s online presence and use it as a stepping off point for a complete takeover of an identity, leading to credit fraud, theft and much, much worse.

Hacked Limo Co Exposes Customer Data

While analyzing the data trail of the recent, highly-publicized Adobe security breach and data theft, researchers also discovered data that appears to have been stolen from a prominent online broker of limousine and towncar services. Among the some 850,000 customer records discovered were such illustrious names as Donald Trump, LeBron James and Tom Hanks as well numerous other wealthy and/or famous individuals. The data also included credit card information, pickup times and locations and even ID numbers of private airplanes used by this company’s customers. The records also included notes on customer behaviors and activities including a number of tidbits that could prove embarrassing or even potentially incriminating. Even if the data were to somehow avoid falling into the hands of police or tabloids, it’s highly likely that cybercriminals will have already cherry-picked many of the customer records for their potential use to fuel spear-phishing attacks and other focused cyber-espionage attempts on corporate and government targets.

What this means for you:

You may have enforced rigor and discipline in your own technology, to the point where you feel fairly confident that you can avoid most attempts to compromise your technology security, but the above points out an uncomfortable reality: you cannot control what information is being gathered about you whenever you interact with the rest of the world. You have two choices here: acceptance and vigilance – be watchful and cautious, and come to grips with the fact that 100% security is impossible, or move to a bunker in the wilderness, off the grid and completely isolated from society. However distasteful and infuriating the former may feel some days, the latter is just not a practical choice (or even possible) for most people.

Twitter Hacked Again

An Islamist hacktivist going by the moniker “Mauritania Attacker” claims to have hacked and accessed the entire database of Twitter accounts. As proof of this exploit, he has published details on 15,000 accounts that included access tokens users have generated for other applications that use Twitter either as an authentication source, or as a means to publish data from or to the microblogging service. According to representatives from Twitter, no accounts have been compromised, and the account details released by the hacker did not contain passwords (hashed, encrypted or otherwise). Security analysts suspect that it may be possible to use the exposed security tokens to gain limited access to publish through the associated Twitter account via third party app (which is what the tokens are for in the first place) if a hacker could ascertain for which app a specific token was created.

What this means for you:

If you use Twitter, you should do two things:

  1. Enable login verification by going to your Twitter settings -> Account -> Login Verification. This basically sends out a confirmation to your mobile device that must be entered in order to log into your Twitter account.
  2. Revoke permissions to Twitter-enabled apps. You can do this by going to your Twitter settings -> Apps and clicking “Revoke Access” next to every app on the list, even the ones you might use frequently. Then, you can go back to your favorite apps and reauthenticate. This way, you can recreate the access tokens, and not have to worry about the possibility that your access tokens were among the ones shared by the Mauritania Attacker.
